Wow! I can't believe it has only been 4 days since Jackie and I have started our adventure! Time has been moving by in new ways for me because of all the driving and different places. So.. post plan of action...I figure I will recap the past few days and interject random thoughts throughout!
After waking up in Niagara on Saturday, Jackie and I drove up to Toronto for a few hours. A big component of that adventure is a little thing I like to call "BCA" not to be confused with "BAC." It stands for Border Crossing Anxiety. This is commonly found in awkward girls who get intimidated easily and start mumbling to themselves. Fortunately, Jackie does not have BCA. Unfortunately, I do. That is all I will say on the matter before I start sweating profusely.
Toronto was fun... except for the part where we had no idea why no one was up before noon...that was awkward. After people started surfacing, we ended up in Kensington market.. a cute trendy neighborhood that had a lot of small local shops and thrift/vintage stores. We were famished and got awesome vegan food at a place called "Hot Beans" after visiting a weird little shop that sold pickle finger puppets (Jackie and I were both tempted to make these pickle fingers apart of our adventure but...alas).
After heading across the *ahem* border, we ended up in a sketchy little area of Kalamazoo, Michigan to stay the night before heading into Chicago in the morning. This is where more of my awkwardness fits in. Apparently, I remembered incorrectly our room number and tried to get into the wrong room... then the owner came by to help get us in because our key "wasn't working"... but then there were suitcases in the room and I got awkward and became a 12 year old child.
Speaking of awkward, Jackie and I have a little game we play. It's called "What will Macy spill on her shirt today?" So far we have Peanut Butter, juice from an apple, and Grapefruit fizzy water. I'll keep you posted on any updates to the list. Additionally, it gets kind of lonely from time to time, just having Jack and I... so we've kind of developed this attachment to her car, Gus. Gus is a blue Honda Fit and is named after the cute little mouse from Cinderella. We will affectionately greet Gus after long tours around cities, pat him on the road when he has made it up a tough hill, and talk about him like he is a person. I am getting worried. This is only day 4 and I don't want to go COMPLETELY crazy by the time I get back to VA.
Anyways, Chicago. Yes. Chicago was a pleasant surprise! I was not expecting to like it as much as I did. We parked Gus in Greektown where we were promptly greeted by a parking attendant who had a Greek accent but was code switching a little bit to Spanish. He immediately saw me and said "COME SEE MY TOMATOES!" I wish I could explain how he said it but it was just so cute I had to go over and see his plants. He has been growing tomatoes and other vegetables along the sides of the parking lot and it was just so funny how much pride he had in them. After the tomato business, we walked over to Millennium Park, when we saw the sky pulling some shenanigans on us...
Creepy, right? So we went into The Art Institute of Chicago where we proceeded to walk around and check out awesome art for a while. The good thing about Jackie and I is we have very similar interests in art and have the same museum-browsing-pace. We like to see most things at a walk by pace but will stop and look for details when something catches our eye. We also really just cared about the Impressionists so after seeing some pieces by Van Gogh and Monet we were satisfied.
So after it cleared up and stopped being the apocalypse outside we went to the Cloud Gate..aka the Bean! This is a famous landmark of Chicago...touristy thing.. seen in "The Vow" ...but also very cool!
ya know, just punching myself
Jackie having a moment
being all classy snazzy
interacting with the sculptures
this took entirely too much effort
So! After strolling around the park we went to an amazing place called Baba Pita. It was baller Greek/Middle Eastern food and we were VERY fat and happy. We're trying to get good food we can't get at home while staying under $10 each time we dine out.
Upon arriving at our hotel we had a major mishap occur! But this time it wasn't due to our awkwardness! The power was out in the hotel and we were stranded. Fortunately for us, my Aunt lives an hour north in Wisconsin so we were able to drive up to her and stay there! It was nice seeing her and it was a fun surprise :)
This morning we ended up going through Wisconsin, Minnesota, and part of South Dakota. The main highlights were stopping for a pic to see this guy...
taking a quick bite to eat this....
and officially pulling a Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn to stick our toes in the Mississippi itself
Now we're in Sioux Falls at a nice Inn and are getting ready for our 4 DAY TRIP INTO THE WILDERNESS AKA CAMPINGG! So I'll be MIA for the next 4 days but I will resurface in Seattle! If you are enjoying reading these posts gimme a little text or facebook post! It will be nice to know someone is entertained/interested in my shenanigans :)
WISH ME LUCKKKKK!
